Hi im new to the forum! After having sleep studies my specialist has diagnosed me with mild narcolepsy and has prescribed me modafinil. Has anyone else used this and if so how did they find it?

Thanx kitty

Hi Kitty, I am too on modafinil.

If you want to have a semi-normal life, as in be able to go out and socialise without falling asleep, then modafinil is good, if you are studying ,then modafinil can enhance your cognative process (if you still have the ability to take in info still), make you read a book, write a book, and generally make you feel a whole lot better.

The bad side is the side affects, to which I only get one, and that is enhanced migraines, (as I expect you to get headaches and migraines anyway) in fact it is more like eyeball ache., sometimes I cant even look in the direction of the sky as it is too bright. modifinil is the best 'upper' out there, i would say the modalert variety and not the provigil kind.

hope this helps.

Ben

Hi there.

I was probably one of the first people to be prescribed modafinil in the UK many years ago. Whilst modafinil works for many people, it didn't work for me.

Medication, and how it is titrated is a very personal journey for every sufferer. Modafinil is a pretty good place to start, however, and fingers crossed, hopefully it will work for you. It's worth finding out from other modafinil taking narcolepsy sufferers how and when they take their medication, as this kind of thing is worth knowing...

Hello Kitty, i've been taking Modafinil for 13 years now and have on the whole have had a positive experience with it. i do occasionally get a headaches similar to the ones described by one of the other people who answered your post. I also get spots with it though very seldom on my face. These side effects far outweigh the ones associated with ampetamine based drugs in my opinion. I wasn't diagnosed till i was in my late thirties and had taken speed for many years to combat the excessive tiredness i felt so i have had some experience of the side effects amphetamines can have. After my diagnosis i adopted the attitude of, "well now i know what i've got and i've now got pills for it, i'll be alright now" , it took me a couple of years to properly come to terms with narcolepsy and how it had affected my life and me. It doesn't have to be a total life changing condition, much depends on the severity to which you suffer from Narcolepsy. If as you say that you only have a mild condition that is great, i would only advise that you take the time to properly reflect on how narcolepsy has cast it's shadow on your life so far . Good luck for the future and please feel free to ask if their is any other questions that you think i might be able to help with. yours peter
