Hi all

I have recently been diagnosed with narcolepsy and am currently taking Provigil.

Does anyone know if I would be entitled to free prescriptions? A friend of mine says that as it is a life-long condition I may be eligible.

Thanks.

Trish

Ah Trisha if only it was that easy.

Certain conditions do give an automatic exemption from paying your prescription charges, which have just gone up again. While things like epilepsy is among that list narcolepsy isn't. In fact narcolepsy is one of a range of life-long conditions that isn't on the list for free prescriptions and I have to say when we have stopped fighting with the Department of Health about Pandemrix, vaccines in general, opening up the VDCS, getting a rational debate going on Xyrem, having them take sleep dissorders seriously and get some basic training in sleep dissorders to GPs - getting free prescriptions is top of the list to get sorted.

In the meantime if you are taking more tham one item of medication per month then you should look at a prepaid card. It isn't free (costs about £95 p.a.) but is cheaper than paying monthly charges if you have mor ethan two items.

Many thanks for your help John.

I guess £7.65 is nothing to pay really, considering before the Modafinil I used to spend around £120 a month on coffee to keep me awake!

Hi Trisha,

If you're on a low income, you may be eligible for exemption from fees.
Details are here: http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcosts/Pages/Prescriptioncosts.aspx

I pay for a pre-payment certificate - it's £10.40 a month (for the 12 month one), and as I get 4-5 items a month, it's well worth it.

I am also taking Modafinil and my Neurologist said that I should be able to get free perscriptions under the same category as people that have epilepsy (even though I don't have epilepsy). She said that to get the form for free perscriptions you have to go to your GP.

I recently went to my GP and explained what my neurologist said, and he happily filled in the form for me, which I then put in the post a few weeks ago and am now just waiting for it to come back to me.
