Since the narcolepsy has gotten worse my senses of smell and taste have gone hypersensitive ..is this common?Or is this something else?

Quite common for people with narcolepsy to get periods where taste and smell become hypersensitive. Some people think it could be the drugs that you take and certainly I have read some reports about modafinil (provogil) giving that affect. Others think it could be due to the brain reacting to the loss of hypocretin. I don't know why but I think a good 25% of people do get this reaction.

However it could also indicate something else so, as always, whenever your condition changes, speak to your GP or consultant!

I have a ludicrously sensitive sense of smell, never connected that with the narcolepsy before.

I also have a very sensitive smell/taste so much so that i only eat really bland foods. The strong sense of smell also leads to bouts of nausea. I did wonder if there was a link to narcolepsy as it seems no one else i know shares this sense. I have experienced hallucinations of images and noises(when tired) for many years but just recently i have thought my cat was rubbing up against my leg when she wasn't even in! And felt someone touch my shoulder when i was home alone. At about the same time i started to smell things other people couldn't. After twice calling out the gas man convinced we had a leak and bieng told it was fine i mentioned it to my consultant and he said it was likely that i was actually hallucinating some of the smells. A friend of mine who has epilepsy (i know it's not the same thing but it is a neurological condition) said she "imagines" smells of has a stronger sense of smell a couple of hours before a siezure so who knows? The brain really is a fascinating organ!
