Hello,

Does anyone have any advice on claiming Employment and Support Allowance for narcolepsy-cataplexy? I know that the person who reads the form won't know much about the condition and I don't know how to go about explaining my problems - even where to begin. I know it's only a form, but I'm so stressed about it, it's awful. I really hope someone can help. Thanks for listening.

You can find some very good information on the DLA and how to fill out the form on this website. Go to the Living with it tab, that opens a sub menu, click on the Financial status/benefits tab and you will come to a whole section on the Disabled Living Allowance that gives lot's of tips and ideas for claiming the benefit. As a charity we are at the moment talking to the DWP about making it easier for someone with narcolepsy to claim DLA, so watch this space. Many members are able to claim the mid and lower level of DLA - which is in two parts (social and mobility) so it is well worth trying for. I even know a few who have the highest level and the tips they gave are in the sections on the website. So, it's well worth going for. Good luck and if you need any help just ask.

John

Good luck with your application and don't be daunted - our daughter made an application for DLA and it was accepted, not at the highest rate, but a success anyway without too much effort.

Thank you both for the information and encouragement. I will take a good look at that section - although the benefit is a bit different to DLA I'm sure a lot of the same info will apply. If anyone has any more tips or knows of any info specific to ESA I would love to hear about that also. Thanks again!

Well, the truth is the stuff we have on the site will not help you very much! I have just come back from a training session at CRB regarding the ESA and I wll be getting more information in the next few days. I hope to be able to post something on the site by the end of the week. For those that don't know ESA has repaced a raft of benefits including incapacity. The idea is that ESA provides a "Pathway back to work" and involves a whole host of complex looking self assessment forms and a focused medical examination. Please note that if you have been in hospital, are in hospital or are recovering from treatment as an inpatient you should get ESA as an automatic right. For people with narcolepsy, if your condition "Puts your physical (or mental) health at risk or any of your fellow workers at risk" you should be able to claim the benefit. As I said at the start, more of this will go on the website as soon as I have the information and I can onlt say sorry to guimauve and everybody for not having this up before now.
