Respiratory Medicine Service
The Respiratory Medicine service treats adults with a full range of respiratory diseases including:
- Asthma
- COPD
- Bronchiectasis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Sleep apnoea
- Lung cancer
The service is staffed from across many professions and includes consultant doctors and their teams, nurse consultants in both respiratory and cystic fibrosis and their specialist nursing teams, alongside many staff from physiotherapy, respiratory physiology and other allied health professionals.
Services are available to people living in Belfast and those requiring more specialist advice and treatment from across Northern Ireland.
Referrals to the respiratory service are primarily made by your GP.
Patients who are under the care of the Belfast Trust will already have the contact details of their link respiratory specialist nurse who they can contact for advice. Specialist referrals to the regional respiratory services are usually made from a hospital consultant in your local area.
Inpatient services are provided in:
- Belfast City Hospital, – 8 North and 8 South
- Royal Victoria Hospital – ward 7B and
- Mater Hospital – Ward B sites.
The nursing staff on these wards have particular expertise in the management of acute and chronic respiratory conditions.
